Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu Train: Times, Trains and Timing

Trains from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes): PeruRail's May to December 2026 timetable, 05:05 to 21:00, about 1 h 30 min, Inca Rail's services, and the tour that ends at the station.

Updated October 2026

The train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes) takes about an hour and a half, and PeruRail’s May to December 2026 timetable runs 15 departures a day from 05:05 to 21:00. Inca Rail runs its own trains on the same line with a similar journey time. Ollantaytambo is the end of the road for most travellers, which makes it the natural place to finish a Sacred Valley day: see the valley, get off at the station, and sleep at the foot of Machu Picchu.

From PeruRail’s published timetable for May to December 2026 (perurail.com), read 26 October 2026. Returns from Machu Picchu Pueblo run from 05:35 to 21:50. PeruRail says timetables and frequencies are subject to change; fares are shown only in its booking engine.

Expedition is the standard train, Vistadome has panoramic windows, and Vistadome Observatory adds an open observation car. The luxury Hiram Bingham, run by Belmond, leaves from Poroy near Cusco instead.

Inca Rail

Inca Rail sells five classes on the same route: The Voyager, The 360 (with an open-air observation car), The Prime, The First Class and The Private. Its pages give a journey of roughly an hour and a half over about 43 km, and its Ollantaytambo station office is open from 06:00 to 19:45. Inca Rail does not publish a timetable outside its booking engine, so check its departures when you book.

Timing the train after a Sacred Valley tour

Book a train that leaves after 4 pm. That is the advice of the operators whose tours end in Ollantaytambo, which drop you at about 3 to 3:30 pm. On PeruRail’s 2026 timetable it means the 19:04 or the 21:00; the 15:37 is too tight. The one-way day that ends at the Ollantaytambo station is built for this, from $26 in current promotion (usually $37), rated 4.8 from 1,805 reviews (checked October 2026). The Ollantaytambo page compares it with the other tours that end there.

Machu Picchu, Rainbow Mountain, the city and more: what else runs on your dates.

If you would rather go early in the morning, sleep in Ollantaytambo the night before and take one of the 05:05 to 08:00 departures; you arrive in Aguas Calientes in time for a morning entry slot. The where-to-stay guide covers Ollantaytambo’s hotels.

Recent disruptions to know about

  • Station access works. In April 2026 PeruRail announced that municipal road works would close the usual access to the Ollantaytambo station for about eight months from 13 April, with traffic sent by a detour. Allow extra time to reach the platform.
  • Suspensions. PeruRail suspended traffic on the line on 2 October 2026 after an incident involving an Inca Rail train and a PeruRail train, and resumed it progressively afterwards. Wildfires in the dry season have also caused short suspensions. Check the operator’s notices a day or two before you travel.

After the train: Machu Picchu itself

The train goes to Aguas Calientes, not to the ruins. From the town a bus climbs to the entrance, or you walk up. Entry is a separate ticket for a timed slot and a circuit, sold by Peru’s Ministry of Culture; GetYourGuide also sells the Machu Picchu entry ticket with your choice of circuit 1, 2 or 3 from $45, which does not include the bus, the train or a guide. Aguas Calientes sits at about 2,040 m and Machu Picchu at 2,430 m, both well below Cusco; the altitude guide has the profile.
