The Guide
Chinchero: the Village, the Ruins and the Market
The highest stop of the Sacred Valley day, and the one where the Andean present is easiest to see.
Chinchero is the village on the high plateau between Cusco and the Sacred Valley, 30 km from the city at about 3,750 m, and it is the first stop of nearly every valley tour. It is known for two things: its weaving, still done by local families and cooperatives, and its archaeological park, Inca terraces and walls topped by a colonial church. The tour at the top of this page gives it about forty minutes before the rest of the valley loop, from $26 in current promotion (usually $29), rated 4.8 from 1,150 reviews (checked October 2026).
Check dates for the Chinchero day
The archaeological park
Peru’s Ministry of Culture runs Chinchero as an archaeological park, open from 07:00 to 18:00, averaging 3,750 m. Long Inca terraces fall away below the old village, and the colonial church stands on Inca foundations above the square. Entry is on the Boleto Turístico: the partial Circuit III ticket at S/70 covers Chinchero, Moray, Ollantaytambo and Pisac for two days (COSITUC, checked October 2026), and on most tours your guide sells it here, at the first stop. Keep it for the rest of the day.
The weavers
The weaving demonstrations are the part most visitors remember. A family or a cooperative shows how alpaca and sheep’s wool is washed, spun and dyed with plants and minerals, and how the patterns are woven. The demonstration is free and nobody has to buy; the textiles are for sale, and their prices reflect long hours of hand work. If you want to buy weaving, Chinchero is a better place for it than a market stall in Cusco, because you can see who made it.
Chinchero market or Pisac market?
Both towns hold their main market on Sunday. Pisac’s is the bigger and better known, with craft stalls around the square every day; PromPerú’s traveller guide describes its Sunday gathering of the surrounding communities. Chinchero’s Sunday market is smaller and more local, with produce alongside the textiles. If you are in the valley on a Sunday, the full-day tours that pass both let you see a little of each.

See this tour →Prices, ratings and review counts from GetYourGuide, checked October 2026. Operators price by season, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
Note that the half-day tours visit a weaving workshop in Chinchero but not always the archaeological park: the Chinchero weavers, Moray and salt mines tour says plainly that the Chinchero site is not included. If the ruins and the church matter to you, pick a full day like the one above.
Before you go
Chinchero is the highest stop of the usual day, higher than Cusco by about 350 m, and it comes first thing in the morning. Walk slowly on the cobbles and the terrace steps, and drink water. The altitude guide has every stop in metres, and the tourist ticket guide explains which ticket covers Chinchero.
How these facts were checked
Chinchero’s park hours, altitude and the 30 km distance from Cusco are from the Ministry of Culture’s Cusco office (culturacusco.gob.pe), read 26 October 2026. The tourist-ticket prices and circuits are from COSITUC (cosituccusco.pe). The Pisac Sunday market is described in PromPerú’s traveller guide; Chinchero’s Sunday market is reported by Cusco guides. Tour prices, ratings and itineraries are from GetYourGuide, checked October 2026.

What Guests on the Chinchero Day Say
"Benito was a great guide!!! Highly recommend him, he gave us amazing insights and information about history and geography about Peru and Inca culture. I would recommend him 100% if anyone is looking to book this adventure."
"Our guide was amazing, food was very very good and overall the trip was nice ;) The only thing we did not enjoy were two tourist trap places- the store with chocolate made with salt and the one with silver. It was very overpriced, and sadly the guide did not inform us about it :/"
"We loved our tour with Benito! We only had a day to explore the Sacred Valley and felt we were able to hit all the places we wanted to see in one day. The tour is long, but worth it. The van was comfortable to ride in all day and the lunch was a fantastic buffet. Would highly recommend going to these sites on a guided tour as we felt we learned so much more. I would highly recommend this tour!"
"All the activities were entertaining and exciting in different ways. Benito has been an amazing guide who helped us learn so much. He’s the most charming and knowledgeable guide we’ve had during our whole time in Peru! Everything was well organised and we were well taken care of. Lunch was unexpectedly amazing as well!"
"Benito was a wonderful guide! He was knowledgeable, interesting and engaging! The tour was a great introduction to the Sacred Valley and we experienced a lot in one day."

Chinchero Tour FAQ
The ruins, the weavers, the market and the ticket.
Chinchero is on the Boleto Turístico: the partial Circuit III ticket at S/70 for a foreign adult covers it with Moray, Ollantaytambo and Pisac for two days (COSITUC, checked October 2026). There is no Chinchero-only ticket. Most tours sell the ticket here, at the first stop of the day; pay in cash, in soles.
Sunday is the main market day. It is smaller and more local than Pisac's, with produce alongside the textiles. The weaving centres in the village are open on other days, and the tours stop at one every day.
Pisac for the bigger craft market, which runs every day and is fullest on Sunday; Chinchero for weaving, which you can watch being made. Most full-day Sacred Valley tours pass through both towns, so on a Sunday you see a little of each.
Its weaving and its archaeological park: Inca terraces and walls with a colonial church built on top of them. Local families and cooperatives still spin, dye and weave alpaca and sheep's wool by hand, and show visitors how. The park is open from 07:00 to 18:00 (Ministry of Culture).
About 3,750 m, roughly 350 m higher than Cusco (3,399 m). It is the highest stop of the usual Sacred Valley day and usually comes first, about an hour from Cusco. Walk slowly on the cobbles and terrace steps. Figures from the Ministry of Culture and INEI.
30 km by road (Ministry of Culture, Cusco office), about 45 minutes to an hour by tour van. It sits on the road from Cusco to Urubamba, which is why the tours stop there first.
Not always: several visit a weaving workshop in Chinchero but skip the archaeological park. One of them says so plainly in its listing. If the ruins and the church matter to you, book a full day that lists the Chinchero archaeological site, like the one at the top of this page.
Yes, the demonstration is part of the tour and there is no obligation to buy. The weavers sell their textiles afterwards, and the workshops charge no entrance fee.
