"The tour was amazing! Jorge, our guide was brilliant and he explained all the places, the history and culture of Sacred Valley very well. The tour was well timed and not rushed at all. The food served during lunch was also great. Overall, it was a great experience and I would like to thank Jorge once again for being such an awesome guide."

Ollantaytambo, Pisac, Back to Cusco
The afternoon climbs the 200-odd steps of the Ollantaytambo fortress, where you can leave the tour for the train, then visits Pisac on the way back. Cusco by about 6 to 7 pm.

The Guide
The Sacred Valley Day: What It Is, What It Costs, Which to Book
One long loop of the valley road from Cusco, five Inca sites, two gate fees paid in soles, and a choice between coming back to Cusco or staying for the train.
A Sacred Valley tour is one long day out of Cusco along the Urubamba river. Nearly every group tour now does the same loop: Chinchero’s weavers, the circular terraces of Moray and the Maras salt mines in the morning, a buffet lunch in Urubamba, then the fortress of Ollantaytambo and the ruins of Pisac in the afternoon, back in Cusco around 6 or 7 pm. The tours differ in price, in group size, and in one decision that matters more than any other: whether you come back to Cusco that night or get off in Ollantaytambo for the train to Machu Picchu.
The day at the top of this page is the one we would book. Inka Altitude’s tour covers all five sites with a bilingual guide and lunch, from $25 in current promotion (usually $36) per person, rated 4.8 from 3,987 reviews (checked October 2026), with free cancellation and an optional drop-off in Ollantaytambo at about 3 pm.
Check dates for the Sacred Valley day

What the day looks like
Pick-up is early, between about 5:45 and 6:15, from your hotel in the historic centre or a meeting point a few streets away. The first stop is Chinchero, about an hour out on the plateau at 3,750 m, where a weaving cooperative shows how alpaca wool is spun and dyed with plants. Then Moray, the concentric Inca terraces that Peru’s Ministry of Culture describes as an agricultural experimentation centre, and the Maras salt mines, thousands of small pans fed by a salty spring and still worked by local families.
Lunch is a buffet in Urubamba, down on the valley floor. In the afternoon you climb the 200-odd steps of the terraced fortress at Ollantaytambo, and then, on the long drive back, stop at Pisac, the ruins and terraces above the market town. The sites are far apart, so a good part of the day is spent in the van, with about 30 to 45 minutes at each stop. It is a full day rather than a deep one; the place pages say where it pays to slow down.
What it really costs
The tour price buys the van, the guide and lunch. Two entrance fees are extra, and both are paid in cash, in soles, on the day:
| Fee | What it covers | Price (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Boleto Turístico, partial Circuit III | Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero and Moray, valid 2 days | S/70 |
| Boleto Turístico, integral | 16 sites in and around Cusco, Circuit III included, valid 10 days | S/130 |
| Maras salt mines | the salt pans only (not part of the tourist ticket) | S/20 |
Tourist-ticket prices from COSITUC’s published tariff (cosituccusco.pe), read 26 October 2026; the salt-mine fee is charged at the gate by MaraSal, the company of the Maras and Pichingoto communities. Foreign adult prices; students and Peruvian residents pay less.
So budget the tour price plus S/90 for the classic day. Most guides sell the tourist ticket at the first stop, in Chinchero, but you cannot buy a single-site ticket for any of these four sites: the partial Circuit III ticket is the smallest you can buy. If you will also visit Sacsayhuamán or the Qorikancha museum in Cusco, the S/130 integral ticket covers everything and is the better buy. The tourist ticket guide explains the circuits.
The valley, place by place
- Moray and Maras is the half-day version: the terraces, the salt pans and the Chinchero weavers, back in Cusco by mid-afternoon, from $15 in current promotion (usually $16). The best choice if you have only a morning, or have done the valley floor already.
- Pisac has the most spectacular terraces of the day and the best-known craft market. The tour at the top of the Pisac page ends its day there.
- Ollantaytambo is where the train to Machu Picchu leaves. Tours that end there let you see the valley and sleep in Aguas Calientes the same night.
- Chinchero is the weaving village on the plateau: a colonial church on Inca walls, a Sunday market and the highest stop of the day.
Coming back to Cusco, or staying for the train?
If Machu Picchu is next, do not go back to Cusco. Book a Sacred Valley tour that drops you in Ollantaytambo in the afternoon and a train from about 4 pm: PeruRail’s May to December 2026 timetable has departures from Ollantaytambo through the afternoon and evening, the last at 21:00, and the ride to Aguas Calientes takes about an hour and a half. The train guide has the timetable, and the Ollantaytambo page compares the tours that end there.
If you are not heading on, the round trip from Cusco is simpler and cheaper. The valley floor is also lower than Cusco: Urubamba sits at about 2,870 m against 3,399 m in the city, which is why many people do this day early in their stay. The altitude guide has every stop in metres.
Where to stay
Most people do the valley as a day trip from Cusco, where the tours pick up. If you have two or three nights to spare, sleep in the valley instead: Urubamba is the centre, with hotels set in gardens and the easiest roads to Moray and Maras, and Ollantaytambo is the old Inca town beside the railway station, the base the night before an early Machu Picchu train.
Hotels in Urubamba Hotels in Ollantaytambo Hotels in central Cusco
The afternoon before your valley day, a free walking tour of Cusco is a good way in: the guides meet in the historic centre most days, booking is free and you pay what you think the tour was worth. See the free walking tours in Cusco. The where-to-stay guide weighs the three bases.

How these facts were checked
The tourist-ticket prices, circuits and validity are from COSITUC’s tariff and circuit pages (cosituccusco.pe), read 26 October 2026. The salt-mine fee is the price charged at the gate in 2026 as published by several Cusco operators and guides; MaraSal does not publish a tariff online. Altitudes and the description of Moray are from the Ministry of Culture’s Cusco office (culturacusco.gob.pe), and Cusco and Urubamba from INEI. Train times are from PeruRail’s May to December 2026 timetable. Tour prices, ratings, review counts and itineraries are from GetYourGuide, checked October 2026. "Highly recommend this tour! I really enjoyed learning about the Inkas, and Sacred Valley is absolutely gorgeous. Our guide Lily was very entertaining and I wished I had some cash on me to tip her - she was great. Also, buffet lunch was excellent - this tour is a steal at this price cuz food alone would cost $15-20 if bought separately"
"Incredible visit! Our guide was Jorge, very knowledgeable about Inca and peru culture, English fluent, super nice guy. The transportation was super good, clean, comfortable. The lunch was great, super tasteful food, multiple options, super fresh. I strongly recommend this tour!"

Sacred Valley Tour FAQ
The questions people ask before booking a Sacred Valley day, answered in the first sentence.
The van from Cusco, a bilingual guide and, on the full-day tours, a buffet lunch in Urubamba; the entrance fees are not included. The usual full day visits Chinchero, Moray, the Maras salt mines, Ollantaytambo and Pisac. You pay the tourist ticket (S/70 for the partial Circuit III, which covers Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero and Moray) and the salt-mine fee (S/20) in cash on the day (COSITUC tariff and the Maras gate, checked October 2026). Drinks and tips are also extra.
A full day: pick-up between about 5:45 and 6:15 and back in Cusco around 6 to 7 pm, roughly 12 hours. Tours that end in Ollantaytambo finish at about 3 to 3:30 pm. The half-day Moray, Maras and Chinchero tour takes about 7 hours and is back in Cusco by mid-afternoon. A good part of any of these days is spent driving between sites, with about 30 to 45 minutes at each stop.
Yes, for most visitors to Cusco: it is the cheapest way to see five Inca sites and the valley itself in one day, and it saves the hire of a driver. The honest catch is the pace. You see each site for half an hour or so, in a group, and spend hours in the van. If you want time at Pisac or Ollantaytambo, sleep in the valley and visit them on your own the next day, or book a private day from Urubamba.
Yes. Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero and Moray do not sell single-site tickets; you need the Boleto Turístico. The partial Circuit III ticket covers exactly those four sites for two days at S/70 for a foreign adult; the integral ticket at S/130 covers 16 sites around Cusco for ten days (COSITUC, cosituccusco.pe, checked October 2026). It is sold in person only: at the COSITUC office on Avenida El Sol in Cusco or at the sites themselves, and most guides sell it at the first stop. The Maras salt mines are not part of it and charge their own fee.
Yes, and it is the most efficient way to reach Machu Picchu from Cusco. Several tours, including the one at the top of this page, offer a drop-off in Ollantaytambo at about 3 pm; book a train that leaves after 4 pm. PeruRail's May to December 2026 timetable has Ollantaytambo departures through the afternoon and evening up to 21:00, and the ride to Aguas Calientes takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. Bring only a small bag: group tours allow one carry-on or a 30-litre backpack.
No. Cusco is in its own valley about 30 km south, and the road climbs over a plateau before it drops into the Sacred Valley of the Urubamba river. Pisac is 33 km from Cusco and Chinchero 30 km; Ollantaytambo is 61 km away by the Chinchero road or 92 km through Pisac (Ministry of Culture, Cusco office). That distance is why the valley is a full day trip rather than a half-day outing.
Lower on the valley floor: Urubamba is at about 2,870 m and Ollantaytambo about 2,790 m, against 3,399 m in Cusco. The plateau stops are as high or higher: Moray averages 3,480 m and Chinchero about 3,750 m, and the ruins above Pisac average 3,400 m. Machu Picchu, at 2,430 m, is lower than all of them. The altitude guide has every stop.
For a first visit, a full day that covers all five sites with lunch and gives you the option of leaving in Ollantaytambo; for Machu Picchu the same night, one that ends at the Ollantaytambo station; for only a morning, the Moray, Maras and Chinchero half day. The three are compared side by side in the table above. All of them leave the entrance fees to you, so compare tour prices plus the S/90 in fees.
The dry season, from about May to September, gives clear skies and dry paths, and it is also the busiest. The tours run all year, rain or shine. In the rainy months, roughly December to March, mornings are often clearer than afternoons and the valley is at its greenest. Pisac's market is at its fullest on Sundays.
